Origin of Valta
Our Story – From Butter to Buffalo
Our Farm
Our farm is located in the northwest corner of the Alberta-Peace Region. We are one of many farms and ranches in the area that is “home” to buffalo.
Our community, Valhalla Centre, established by our pioneering ancestors in 1912 has seen many diverse changes in “how the local farmer makes a living.”
During the 1930’s difficult economic times led to creative thinking by local farmers, my grandfather being one of them. They established a CREAMERY that used the local milk supply to make and sell butter. This successful enterprise, named VALTA BUTTER sustained the community and won them “first prize” at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.
When we decided to come to Calgary and be a vendor at the Calgary Farmers’ Market in 2004, and tell consumers the amazing bison nutrition story and introduce customers to the wonderful flavour of bison, we felt it appropriate to represent our product under this distinguished community name of Valta. Today, raising buffalo is sustaining our farm and farms of other family members and friends in our community.
If you have not yet tried bison, come visit us at our little farm shop in Ramsay, Calgary and we will be happy to share the bison story with you. You will be glad you did!
